Farmers Market Week Celebrates Growers Across the Nation

Farmers Market Week Celebrates Growers Across the Nation

Farmers Market Week is upon us, and it's a time to celebrate the dedicated growers who work tirelessly to bring a myriad of fresh, local produce to communities nationwide. Among them are the hardworking farmers who sell their bountiful harvests at the Brookside Farmers Market in Kansas City, Missouri every Saturday.

At local markets, various growers showcase a diverse range of produce they cultivate, from tomatoes, peppers, and watermelon to a variety of leafy greens in the spring and fall. Their extensive selection raises the question, "What don’t we grow?” This statement highlights the vast diversity of crops offered at the market.

But farming is not just about growing. A significant amount of preparation takes place on the farm before the produce heads to market. These farmers take pride in their produce and ensure that only the best of their crops make it to market, while "scratch and dent" items remain behind.

Farm businesses, established since the early 2000s, often stem from a deep-rooted passion for agriculture. These businesses encounter various challenges, including the uncertainties of weather and financial hurdles. The journey of maintaining profitability is demanding, often requiring a relentless hustle, especially for small scale operations.

Inflation has also had its impact on the farm, affecting everything from supplies to labor and gas. Despite these challenges, these farmers have found creative ways to maintain their business, such as diversifying their income streams.

The most important part of farming is connecting with people who buy the food. Providing local food and knowing their customers is why they farm. This close bond with their community keeps them going in their farming work.

The Brookside Farmers Market, the largest part of their income, continues to grow. In the past year, attendance at the market has risen from 1,500 to 2,500 people on average each week, with a peak attendance of 3,200 people.

The manager of the market shared that farmers don't have it easy, but they do it out of love. Many growers are adapting, finding new crops to keep growing, and they hope customers will continue to support them.

The Brookside Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering a chance for community members to appreciate the hard work and dedication of their local farmers.
