K-State faculty and students shine at AABP

By Scout Nelson

Three Kansas State University veterinary medicine students and one faculty member were recently honored at the annual American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) conference, held in Columbus, Ohio, from Sept. 12-14. The awards recognized excellence in veterinary studies and research related to bovine care.

Two fourth-year veterinary students were awarded the prestigious $7,500 Zoetis Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship aims to support exceptional veterinary students with a graduation year of 2025 who show promise in becoming outstanding bovine veterinarians. The selection is based on character, experience, and dedication to advancing bovine veterinary care in the United States.

One of these students also received the 2025 AABP Bovine Veterinary Student Recognition Award, sponsored by Merck Animal Health, for their interest and commitment to dairy and/or beef veterinary medicine.

Merck Animal Health emphasized the importance of nurturing future veterinary professionals, with a company representative noting, "Now more than ever, the industry needs these bright minds who will bring their dedication and learnings to veterinary medicine."

In addition to student awards, a current Ph.D. student earned second place in the AABP Research Summaries Graduate Student Awards for their contributions to bovine research. A faculty member also received the AABP Foundation Chair Dr. Gabe Middleton and AABP Foundation Competitive Research Grant Award for their work in animal welfare and applied ethology, focusing on the well-being of domestic animals.

These awards highlight the dedication and expertise of Kansas State’s veterinary community in contributing to the field of bovine veterinary medicine and research, ensuring that the next generation of veterinarians is well-prepared to meet the needs of the industry.
