Kansas State University’s College of Agriculture will host a series of Beginning Farmer and Rancher Conferences this fall to support the next generation of agricultural producers. These events are designed to help new and returning producers build the skills needed for successful and sustainable careers in farming or ranching.
“Returning home to the farm is more than just going back to work; it’s about ensuring the long-term viability of a business and maintaining strong family relationships,” said Ashlee Westerhold, director of the office of farm and ranch transition.
The conference series, developed by Robin Reid and Ashlee Westerhold in K-State’s Department of Agricultural Economics, offers interactive sessions and real-world examples to address the many challenges of starting or transitioning an agricultural operation.
Topics include succession and estate planning, business structure and intergenerational fairness, financial management and lease agreements, effective communication strategies for family discussions, Farm Service Agency loan opportunities, and details about the Kansas Land-Link program.
Each event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will provide lunch and learning materials for attendees. Conference dates and locations are October 17 in Manhattan, November 19 in El Dorado, December 3 in Garden City, and December 4 in Colby.
Participants will have the opportunity to connect with experts, network with peers, and gather resources to create sound business plans and strong transition strategies. These conferences aim to give beginning farmers and ranchers the knowledge to manage finances, communicate effectively within families, and secure the future of their operations.
By focusing on financial planning, estate transitions, and available loan programs, Kansas State University continues its commitment to guiding the next generation of agricultural leaders and supporting rural communities across the state. This fall’s events offer practical tools for those ready to start or return to a farm or ranch career.
