Kansas farm bureau concludes 105th annual meeting

By Scout Nelson

Nearly 400 members of the Kansas Farm Bureau (KFB) recently concluded their 105th annual meeting. This gathering saw the adoption of critical policies that will guide the organization through the 2024 legislative session, with a focus on economic development, agricultural credit, and energy production and transmission.

In a significant move, Pottawatomie County farmer Glenn Brunkow was elected as the vice president. The newly elected board of directors includes Tim Tyson from Linn County, Dan Schmidt from Marshall County, Jim Schmidt from McPherson County, and Jim Sipes from Stanton County. Laura Haffner of Ellis County was also re-elected as the chair of the Women’s Leadership Committee.

The meeting was enriched with a variety of agriculture-related workshops and talks, featuring a keynote address from the acclaimed broadcaster and storyteller, Larry Hatteberg. Additionally, American Farm Bureau Federation and KFB staff members provided crucial updates on various agricultural issues, including the progress towards a new farm bill.

The event also celebrated the achievements of County Farm Bureaus and volunteers for their contributions in 2023. The Women’s Leadership Committee organized a successful silent auction, raising $6,200 for mental health resources.

The KFB Foundations’ Fundraiser, themed “Cousin Eddie’s Christmas Party,” generated over $18,000, benefiting the End Hunger campaign.

These developments at the KFB's annual meeting highlight the organization's ongoing commitment to addressing the needs and challenges of the agricultural community in Kansas, paving the way for a productive year ahead.
