Kansas Fields Show Balanced Soil Moisture Levels

For the week ending September 14, 2025, Kansas fieldwork continued at a steady pace with 5.0 days suitable for operations, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.

Soil moisture supplies were balanced across the state. Topsoil moisture was rated 3 percent very short, 15 percent short, 69 percent adequate, and 13 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture stood at 6 percent very short, 20 percent short, 65 percent adequate, and 9 percent surplus.

Field Crops Report

Winter wheat planting reached 4 percent, close to 8 percent at this time last year and the five-year average of 7 percent.

Corn condition rated 4 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 45 percent good, and 18 percent excellent. Corn dented was 94 percent, like 93 percent last year and 91 percent average. Corn mature was 55 percent, behind 70 percent last year and near the 59 percent average. Harvested corn reached 10 percent, behind 24 percent last year and the 19 percent average.

Soybean condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 55 percent good, and 15 percent excellent. Pods were set on 96 percent of the crop, matching last year's and near the 95 percent average. Leaves were dropping to 24 percent of soybean acres, behind 35 percent last year and the average.

Sorghum condition rated 4 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 24 percent fair, 45 percent good, and 21 percent excellent. Coloring reached 76 percent, near 78 percent last year and 77 percent average. Sorghum mature was 29 percent, near 33 percent last year and ahead of the 24 percent average. Harvest stood at 3 percent, near 5 percent last year and equal to average.

Cotton condition rated 0 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 29 percent fair, 43 percent good, and 21 percent excellent. Cotton balls opening reached 20 percent, well behind 52 percent last year and the 47 percent average.

Pasture and Range Report

Pasture and range conditions were 4 percent very poor, 9 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 50 percent good, and 10 percent excellent. 

Overall, Kansas crops show stable conditions with corn harvest underway, wheat planting starting, and other major crops progressing near seasonal averages.
