Kansas honors century-old family farms in 2024

By Scout Nelson

In 2024, the Kansas Farm Bureau renews its commitment to celebrating the state's agricultural heritage through its "Century Farm" and "Sesquicentennial Farm" programs.  These programs honor longstanding family farms that have been a cornerstone of the Kansas community and economy.

Farm Bureau members owning farms of at least 80 acres, passed down within the same family for over 100 or 150 years, are eligible for these prestigious recognitions. The Century Farm program commemorates families who have maintained farm ownership for a century, while the Sesquicentennial Farm accolade is reserved for those surpassing the 150-year mark.

President Joe Newland of the Kansas Farm Bureau highlights the significant pride Kansas farmers take in their enduring family traditions and the vital role of these programs in acknowledging their contributions to rural life and the state's agricultural legacy.

The deadline for 2024 applications is May 15. Since their inception, the Kansas Farm Bureau has recognized 3,144 Century Farms and 112 Sesquicentennial Farms. Detailed qualification criteria and application processes are available at local county Farm Bureau offices or on the Kansas Farm Bureau website at www.kfb.org/centuryfarm.

This initiative is a testament to the resilience and commitment of Kansas farmers, ensuring that their legacies and contributions to the state's agricultural history are celebrated and remembered.
