Kansas poultry owners alert for HPAI

By Scout Nelson

The rise in migratory bird activity increases the risk of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Kansas. While no cases have been confirmed in domestic or commercial poultry since April 2024, HPAI has been detected in wild birds across the state in November. The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) warns poultry owners about the high risk of exposure and emphasizes biosecurity practices.

HPAI is a highly contagious viral disease affecting chickens, turkeys, and other birds, often causing severe illness or sudden death. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, reduced energy, appetite, and water consumption, decreased egg production, soft-shelled eggs, and diarrhea. Immediate veterinary assistance is essential if these signs appear.

Biosecurity measures are crucial to protect your flock. Guidance can be found on the KDA Division of Animal Health webpage at agriculture.ks.gov/AvianInfluenza. Proper monitoring and precautions can prevent the spread of the disease, ensuring the safety of your birds.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recent HPAI cases do not pose an immediate public health concern. Infected birds and eggs are excluded from the food system. However, cooking poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165˚F is always recommended for safety.

Federal and state authorities, in partnership with the USDA, are conducting additional surveillance and testing in areas with reported cases. The United States has the world’s strongest avian influenza surveillance program, focusing on both commercial poultry and migratory wild birds.

For more details on HPAI prevention and updates on confirmed cases, visit the KDA avian influenza webpage or call 833-765-2006. Protect your flock and stay vigilant to minimize risks.
