Kansas seed law awaits new regulation approvals

Kansas seed law awaits new regulation approvals

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) has marked October 19, 2023, on the calendar for an important public hearing. The session will discuss the proposed regulations concerning the Kansas Seed Law. This in-person hearing will take place at the KDA office in Manhattan, but participants can also join via a video conferencing system.

The core agenda revolves around the introduction of four new regulations and modifications to two existing ones. Most of these adjustments stem from the decisions made during the 2022 legislative session, aiming to provide clarity and definitions to the seed law.

Of these, a significant change catching attention is the inclusion of Caucasian bluestem and yellow bluestem seeds in the restricted weed seeds list. This step embodies KDA's commitment to safeguarding the agricultural sector from the spread of invasive weeds.

KDA has always valued public perspectives, especially now with the proposed changes, including the new weed species additions. The community is encouraged to share their views either on the KDA's public comment webpage or by mailing their feedback directly to their Manhattan address.

At the public hearing, there will be a dedicated segment for public comments, accessible to both in-person and virtual participants. For those choosing the virtual option, pre-registration is necessary to secure the video link.

Special assistance will be available for individuals with disabilities, ensuring everyone can participate and access the regulations without any hindrances.

If required, contact Ronda Hutton for more details or to request accommodation at 785-564-6715 or Ronda.Hutton@ks.gov.
