The Kansas State Fair is back, running from September 8 to 17, offering a rich array of traditions that celebrate one of its core ingredients, wheat. Visitors can expect a mix of activities from carnival rides to concerts, but the focus remains on wheat-centric events.
Cindy Falk, representing the Kansas Wheat Commission, will showcase the winning bread recipe from the 2023 National Festival of Breads on September 13. She will introduce the 'Cheese Lover's Barbecue Bread', created by Gloria Piantek, and discuss its innovative ingredient mix, delectable taste, and unique twisted shape.
The Domestic Arts building will host the Kansas Wheat Commission-sponsored open-class division 'It's All About Bread', showcasing diverse bread entries. The annual Kansas Wheat recipe book, a staple at the State Fair, will feature top bread recipes. Bread lovers can purchase a copy online or explore featured recipes at nationalfestivalofbreads.com/recipes.
Agriland in the Pride of Kansas building offers hands-on activities for children over three decades, including virtual combine rides, grain exploration, and milking a mechanical cow. Supported by agricultural organizations, Falk invites visitors to this farm-to-fork educational segment.
Educators aren't left out either. They can sign up for free lesson plans at Agriland that aim to connect students with Kansas's agricultural heritage. Those unable to attend can access a virtual version of these resources at https://www.ksagclassroom.org/resource/agriland/.
For those interested in exploring further, the fair offers additional wheat-themed exhibitions, including photography contests and wheat weaving displays.
