From January 10-12, Manhattan, Kansas, became the focal point for young agricultural professionals as nearly 500 attendees participated in the annual Young Farmers and Ranchers (YF&R) leaders conference.
Hosted by the Kansas Farm Bureau, this event is specifically designed for young farmers and ranchers aged 18-35, providing them with a platform for education, networking, and professional growth.
The conference featured a series of educational workshops, motivational talks, and networking sessions. Keynote speakers included Jordy Nelson, former K-State star and NFL champion, and Dan Thomson, a renowned feedlot veterinarian and television host. Their insights provided both inspiration and practical advice, aligning with the conference’s goal of fostering a new generation of agricultural leaders.
Attendees also participated in various competitions designed to test their knowledge and skills in agriculture. The events highlighted the conference included an Ag Quiz Bowl, a Collegiate Discussion Meet, and a YF&R Discussion Meet. These competitions not only offered opportunities for recognition but also the chance to win significant awards, including cash prizes and expense-paid trips to national conferences.
The Ag Quiz Bowl was won by a team from Kansas State University, demonstrating their agricultural knowledge and quick thinking. In the discussion meets, individuals from Fort Hays State University and Lane County showcased their prowess in agricultural discourse, earning them the opportunity to represent Kansas at future national events.
In addition to competitive events, the conference facilitated tours and workshops that allowed participants to visit local agricultural operations and learn from established professionals in the field. These activities were geared towards providing practical knowledge and fostering a sense of community among young agriculturists.
The success of this year’s conference underscores the importance of such gatherings in nurturing young talent in the agricultural sector. By bringing together young professionals with industry experts and providing them with a platform to learn and grow, the Kansas Farm Bureau continues to play a pivotal role in the development of future agricultural leaders in the state.
