Kansas Farmers Fight for Postal Service

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Farmers Union (KFU), a stalwart supporter of the United States Postal Service (USPS), is advocating for significant changes at the top of the organization. The union's members, who heavily rely on postal services for their agricultural operations, have voiced strong opposition to the recent USPS operational changes under Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.

Since 2020, DeJoy has implemented several controversial policies including the decommissioning of high-speed sorting machines and restructuring that has led to the creation of larger regional processing centers. These changes have resulted in slower mail delivery, particularly affecting rural and remote areas. The KFU argues that these modifications have hindered their ability to conduct daily business efficiently, affecting everything from bill payments to the timely receipt of agricultural supplies.

Additionally, the potential cuts to services such as Saturday and door-to-door delivery threaten to further isolate rural communities. The union also highlighted the economic implications of these policies, noting that reduced service could lead to job losses within the USPS, which has traditionally provided well-paying positions.

The implications extend beyond just the agricultural community. The delay in newspaper deliveries compromises the circulation and relevance of local news, impacting the broader rural economy that depends on timely and reliable information.

Recognizing the critical role of the USPS in rural America's infrastructure, the KFU passed a Special Order of Business during its state convention in November, officially calling for DeJoy's removal. They advocate for a leader who prioritizes the needs of all Americans, particularly those in rural areas.

The KFU stands firm in its resolve to defend a robust and effective postal service from privatization and degradation, emphasizing the importance of the USPS as a pillar of American freedom and commonwealth. Their action underscores a broader concern among rural communities about maintaining essential services that support their livelihoods and quality of life.
