KSU launches new phase in $220M agricultural innovation drive

By Scout Nelson

Kansas State University (KSU) is advancing its significant $220 million agriculture innovation initiative with the recent groundbreaking of the new animal science event center. Named the Bilbrey Family Event Center, with an indoor arena called the Tee Jay Quarter Horses Walker Family Arena, this facility will be adjacent to the Stanley Stout Center, north of the Manhattan campus in the Edge District.

KSU Foundation President and CEO Greg Willems announced the establishment of a center to showcase livestock competitions, judging shows, and large events, aiming to connect youth organizations, students, companies, and the public, and to share knowledge from KSU's animal science programs addressing global food challenges.

The facility is expected to host up to 30 events annually, contributing significantly to the local economy and community. This project aligns with KSU's commitment to being a key contributor to state and local economies.

The project, set to be completed in August 2025, is part of a larger plan to improve KSU's agricultural infrastructure, including the construction of the Agronomy Research and Innovation Center and the Global Center for Grain and Food Innovation, as well as renovations for Weber Hall and Call Hall.

The initiative represents a total investment of $220 million in new and renovated facilities at KSU. As of late 2023, $143 million has been raised towards this goal. KSU President Richard Linton described the initiative as the largest building project in the university's history, set to create unmatched opportunities for faculty, staff, and students in agriculture.

Funding for the Bilbrey Family Event Center comes from various individual and corporate partners, including significant contributions from JP and Teresa Bilbrey of the Doubling Gap Ranch and a challenge grant along with appropriations from the Kansas legislature.

Marty Vanier, a project donor, praised the initiative for synergizing talents and experiences across the university, propelling KSU as a leader in agricultural innovation. This endeavor is not just about building structures but creating a collaborative and innovative environment for advancing agricultural knowledge and solutions.
