Rise to the national bread challenge

Rise to the national bread challenge

By Scout Nelson

The 2025 National Festival of Breads invites amateur bakers across the country to showcase their skills by submitting original recipes. Entries are open through January 16, 2025, for this biennial competition that celebrates creativity in bread baking.

“The National Festival of Breads showcases the creativity of home bakers across the country,” said the event’s co-director. “Join us for this beloved tradition that celebrates baking bread at home with your original entry.”

Launched 34 years ago by Kansas Wheat and other sponsors, the contest has evolved into a national event since 2009. It honours the art of baking, supports Kansas products, and recognises the state’s wheat and milling industries.

This year’s contest features two categories: quick bread and yeast bread. Quick bread includes recipes made without yeast but with leavening agents like baking powder or soda. Yeast bread recipes incorporate yeast and a variety of flours, offering versatility in sweet or savoury options.

Entries will be reviewed by experts at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, and winners will be announced on June 4, 2025. Category winners will receive $1,000 and a baking prize bundle, while honourable mentions will receive $100.

“The National Festival of Breads is the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself in the new year,” said the event director. “Celebrate the joy of baking with family and friends as you create something original!”

Don’t miss this chance to connect with a community of bakers, refine your skills, and enjoy the thrill of competition while celebrating a timeless tradition.
