New soybean yield record in Kansas

New soybean yield record in Kansas

By Scout Nelson

The 2024 Kansas Soybean Yield and Value Contests celebrated remarkable achievements in soybean production, including a record-breaking yield of 126.6 bushels per acre in the statewide no-till irrigated division. This surpassed the previous state record of 114.3 bushels per acre set in 2020.

Despite weather challenges, 56 entries were submitted, showcasing the resilience and innovation of Kansas soybean growers. Fifteen first-time participants joined the contests, highlighting the expanding interest in quality soybean production.

The yield contest featured impressive performances across various divisions. Top dryland yields included entries from the northeast and southeast divisions, with yields nearing 97 bushels per acre. In the irrigated divisions, no-till and conventional-till categories produced notable results, reflecting advanced farming practices and efficient resource management.

The Value Contest emphasised soybean quality, awarding premiums based on protein, oil content, and other value-added factors. A premium of $0.96 over cash value was awarded to the top entry. Two additional entries tied for second with a premium of $0.92, showcasing the emphasis on high-quality crop production.

Monetary awards were presented to winners, including $1,000 for the highest statewide yields in dryland and irrigated categories. District-level winners received additional prizes to honour their contributions to Kansas agriculture.

The Kansas Soybean Yield Contest continues to promote excellence in soybean farming, inspiring growers to adopt innovative practices and enhance crop quality. This annual event highlights the importance of sustainable farming and the dedication of Kansas farmers.
