States Boost Support for New Farmers Success Programs

States Boost Support for New Farmers Success Programs

By Jamie Martin

The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) has approved a policy to help new farmers with business training and technical assistance. This decision, made at the 2025 Winter Policy Conference, aims to strengthen the next generation of farmers through state-funded grant programs.

The new policy calls for state block grants to support business planning, risk management, record-keeping, and effective farm transitions. These initiatives will help new farmers navigate financial challenges and ensure agricultural sustainability.

“State agriculture departments are invested in ensuring that farming and ranching families can successfully pass down their businesses to future generations, as well as lifting up new and young farmers entering this field of work,” NASDA CEO Ted McKinney said. “Arming individuals with information and business training creates a more resilient farm economy when unavoidable weather and market challenges are presented.”

The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service reports that 30% of U.S. farmers are new producers, with over one million farming for less than 10 years. However, financial barriers remain a challenge, as 72% of new farmers rely on off-farm jobs to supplement their income.

McKinney emphasized that targeted financial support and technical assistance are key to ensuring the success of beginning farmers and the long-term strength of American agriculture. NASDA’s policy highlights the importance of investing in the future of farming through education and financial assistance.
