Farmers Adopt New Water Techniques

Farmers Adopt New Water Techniques

By Scout Nelson

Kansas recently celebrated the success of a unique farm competition designed to encourage water-saving farming methods. Known as Testing Ag Performance Solutions (TAPS), the competition helps participants explore and test sustainable agricultural practices that conserve water resources while remaining profitable.

This announcement aligns closely with Kansas Governor Laura Kelly's recent statement emphasizing water's crucial role in agriculture and the rural economy. Speaking during her recent State of the State address, Governor Kelly said, “Without water, the agricultural industry that fuels our economy and sustains our rural way of life cannot survive.”

The TAPS competition, hosted by Kansas State University Research and Extension, differs significantly from traditional farming contests. Instead of focusing solely on crop yield, it provides a hands-on experimental environment where participants test various crop management techniques. Farmers experiment with new technologies, planting dates, irrigation practices, nitrogen applications, crop insurance choices, and marketing strategies.

Daran Rudnick, director of sustainable irrigation at Kansas State University, explained the importance of TAPS: “This exchange of ideas ensures that the competition’s outcomes are rooted in real challenges, and helps drive meaningful progress in efficiency, profitability and sustainability."

Nearly 100 participants engaged actively in the competition, allowing them to explore both virtual simulations and real-world applications of innovative water-saving practices. This experience provided valuable insights into what drives sustainable and profitable farm management.

In January, the competition awarded teams that successfully implemented strategies that significantly reduced water uses while maintaining profitable crop yields. Winners received recognition for their efforts in achieving exceptional results through responsible water management.

Overall, the TAPS program serves as a platform for innovation, collaboration, and practical learning. By promoting water-saving agricultural practices, the competition directly addresses the challenges of water scarcity and sustainability faced by modern agriculture. The success of this event highlights the importance of ongoing efforts to integrate resource conservation into profitable farming, ensuring a sustainable future for Kansas agriculture.
