Kansas family and consumer sciences (FCS) teachers now have a unique opportunity to earn extra support for their classrooms through the Soy in Family & Consumer Sciences Program, sponsored by the Kansas Soybean Commission.
This initiative helps educators teach students about soy-based foods, nutrition, and agriculture. The program reimburses the full cost of classroom food items containing soy, while up to half of the funds may be used for animal proteins like beef, dairy, poultry, or pork.
“Soybeans are my favorite protein’s favorite protein,” said Raylen Phelon, Kansas Soybean Commission member. “Supporting the use of soy in the classroom allows students to be more familiar and comfortable with it so they are more likely to reach for it throughout their life.”
Teachers can introduce the program through hands-on activities like chef competitions, nutrition studies, taste tests, or custom curriculum. Lesson plans, recipe ideas, and soy-themed activities are included to help build a full classroom unit.
Each classroom is eligible for $3 per student, up to $600 per semester, with a minimum of $75. To receive the reimbursement, teachers must submit a request at the end of the semester, including receipts for approved purchases. Payments are then made directly to the school.
“Funding for our program is so helpful,” said a participant from Maize Career Academy. “It’s good for students to learn where soy is found and to get them thinking outside of tofu.”
The entire application and reimbursement process is online, making it simple and quick to apply.
The Kansas Soybean Commission encourages educators to bring agriculture into the classroom and help students understand the connection between food and farming. For forms and more information, visit www.kansassoybeans.org/fcs or call 877-KS-SOYBEAN (877-577-6923).
