The Kansas Livestock Association and Kansas State University will host a Ranch Management Field Day on August 28 at Wells Ranch in Woodson County, south of Gridley. This educational event will feature key topics in livestock health and grazing land management.
A highlight of the day will be a session led by K-State extension beef veterinarian A.J. Tarpoff, who will provide insight into the Asian long horned tick. Though this tick hasn’t yet been found in Kansas, it has appeared in neighboring states and spreads a disease called theileriosis, which has been diagnosed in Kansas cattle imported from elsewhere. The session will help attendees understand how to identify the tick and watch for symptoms in livestock.
Another session will be led by David Kraft from the Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition (KGLC). He will discuss tools and support available for noxious weed control, highlighting KGLC’s collaborative work with Wells Ranch to enhance grazing land health and productivity.
Adding a technological element to the day, Wade Newland from Newland Ag Drones will demonstrate how spray drones are being used to support efficient and precise weed control.
Attendees will also tour the host ranch’s cattle handling facility and hear about improvements made to streamline operations and improve livestock management.
Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. CDT, and the event will end with a free beef dinner at 7:00 p.m. CDT. Signs will be posted to help direct attendees to the location.
This is the second field day in the series, following an earlier event hosted August 21. The Farm Credit Associations of Kansas and Huvepharma are sponsoring both events. For full details, visit the official event page.
