The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development has announced a significant investment of $2.21 million in five Iowa-based projects aimed at promoting clean energy and sustainable agriculture.
These grants, awarded through the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP), will help farmers, ranchers, and small businesses transition to renewable energy sources, reduce energy costs, and create new jobs.
A Boost for Iowa's Rural Economy
"Today's REAP announcement will support rural communities, small businesses, and producers as they adopt clean energy systems," said Theresa Greenfield, USDA Rural Development State Director in Iowa. "The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to securing our energy future by investing in clean, renewable power, enabling agricultural producers and small businesses across Iowa to lower costs and expand their operations."
Specific Projects Funded
The five projects selected for funding include:
Lincolnway Energy LLC: A $1 million grant to install a grain-to-alcohol conversion system, generating significant clean energy.
Quad J Inc.: A $61,468 grant for an energy-efficient grain dryer, reducing energy consumption and costs.
Cresco Heating and Ventilating LLC: A $30,556 grant to install a solar energy system, powering the business and reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.
GrowAg Investments LLP: A $327,109 grant for solar arrays at multiple locations, generating clean energy and increasing farm income.
Red Lion Perry Solar II: A $795,158 grant for a large-scale solar array, providing clean energy to the community.
Expanding Access to Clean Energy
The REAP program plays a crucial role in supporting rural communities by providing financial assistance for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. The Biden-Harris Administration has allocated an additional $600 million for REAP through 2027, thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act.
USDA is now accepting applications for the first round of funding, with deadlines on December 31, 2024, and March 31, 2025. Both REAP and the New ERA Program align with the President's Justice40 Initiative, which aims to direct 40% of federal investments to disadvantaged communities.
By investing in clean energy, the USDA is empowering rural communities to become more sustainable, resilient, and economically prosperous.
