For the week ending August 24, 2025, Kansas recorded 6.3 days suitable for fieldwork, according to USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture was rated 6% very short, 24% short, 65% adequate, and 5% surplus. Subsoil moisture stood at 8% very short, 27% short, 62% adequate, and 3% surplus, reflecting generally stable profiles across much of the state.
The corn condition was rated 4% very poor, 10% poor, 27% fair, 43% good, and 16% excellent. Crop development continued at a near-seasonal pace: dough at 89% (near 91% last year; 87% five-year average), dented at 56% (behind 62% last year; near 57% average), and matured at 12% (behind 18% last year; near 13% average).
Soybeans were rated 1% very poor, 7% poor, 26% fair, 55% good, and 11% excellent. Phenology indicators remained close to typical levels, with 92% blooming (near 93% last year and average), 78% setting pods (near 77% last year and average), and 1% dropping leaves (near 2% last year; 3% average).
Sorghum condition registered 4% very poor, 9% poor, 29% fair, 45% good, and 13% excellent. Progress showed 85% headed (near 87% last year; 84% average), 30% coloring (behind 37% last year; near 31% average), and 6% mature (near 5% last year; 2% average).
Cotton condition rated 0% very poor, 6% poor, 31% fair, 42% good, and 21% excellent. Crop advancement included 96% setting bolls (near 95% last year; ahead of 89% average) and 13% bolls opening (near 17% last year; 15% average).
Pasture and range conditions remained supportive for late summer grazing, rated 4% very poor, 10% poor, 25% fair, 52% good, and 9% excellent. Combined with mostly adequate soil moisture, these ratings suggest continued flexibility for forage management as summer winds down.
Overall, Kansas crops are tracking close to historical benchmarks with generally favorable moisture reserves. Continued monitoring of late season heat, rainfall, and disease pressure will guide harvest timing and help protect yield and quality across row crops.
