2019 was Record Low for Kansas Sunflower Plantings

Corn for grain production in Kansas based on year-end surveys is estimated at a record high 801 million bushels, up 25 percent from 2018, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Yield of 133 bushels per acre is up 4 bushels from last year. Area harvested, at 6.02 million acres of corn for grain, is up 21 percent from 2018. Corn for silage production, at 4.38 million tons, is down 17 percent from last year. Silage yield of 17.5 tons per acre is up 4.0 tons from last year. Producers harvested 250,000 acres of corn for silage, down 36 percent from last year. Corn area planted for all purposes, at 6.40 million acres, is up 17 percent from last year.

Sorghum for grain production in 2019 is estimated at 204 million bushels, down 13 percent from 2018. Yield, at 85.0 bushels per acre, is down 3.0 bushels from a year earlier. Area harvested for grain, at 2.40 million acres, is down 9 percent from 2018. Sorghum for silage production, at 1.05 million tons, is up 16 percent from last year. Silage yield, at 11.0 tons per acre, is down 4.0 tons from last year. Area harvested for silage, at 95,000 acres, is up 35,000 acres from last year. Sorghum area planted for all purposes, at 2.60 million acres, is down 7 percent from last year.

Soybean production for 2019 totaled 186 million bushels, down 8 percent from 2018. Yield, at 41.5 bushels per acre, is down 1.5 bushels from a year earlier. Area for harvest, at 4.49 million acres, is down 4 percent from 2018. Soybean area planted, at 4.55 million acres, is down 4 percent from last year.

Alfalfa hay production, at 2.52 million tons, is up 18 percent from a year earlier. The average yield, at 4.00 tons per acre, is up 0.50 ton per acre from 2018. Area harvested, at 630,000 acres, is up 3 percent from 2018. Alfalfa for haylage and greenchop production, at 188,000 tons, is up 57 percent from last year. Average yield at 7.50 tons per acre, is up 1.50 tons from last year. Area harvested, at 25,000 acres, is up 5,000 from last year. Seedings of alfalfa during 2019 totaled 75,000 acres, up 20,000 acres from the year earlier.

All other hay production, at 3.80 million tons, is up 45 percent from last year. The average yield, at a record high 2.30 tons per acre, is up 0.80 ton per acre from last year. Area harvested at 1.65 million acres, is down 6 percent from 2018. All other haylage and greenchop production, at 570,000 tons, is down 12 percent from last year. Average yield, at 9.50 tons per acre, is up 3.00 tons from last year. Area harvested, at 60,000 acres, is down 40,000 acres from last year.

Oil sunflower production in 2019 is a record low 44.8 million pounds, down 27 percent from last year. Yield, at 1,400 pounds per acre, is down 100 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at a record low 32,000 acres, is down 22 percent from 2018. Area planted, at a record low 37,000 acres, is down 6,000 acres from last year. Non-oil sunflower production of 9.13 million pounds is down 28 percent from last year and a record low. Yield, at 1,250 pounds per acre, is down 250 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at a record low 7,300 acres, is down 1,200 acres from 2018. Area planted, at a record low 8,000 acres, is down 2,000 acres from last year.

Canola production of 20.7 million pounds is down 38 percent from last year. Yield of 1,090 pounds per acre is up 130 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at 19,000 acres, is down 16,000 acres from 2018. Area planted, at 29,000 acres, is down 18,000 acres from last year.

Cotton production of 290,000 bales is down 15 percent from last year. Yield of 910 pounds per acre is down 167 pounds from a year earlier. Area harvested, at a record high 153,000 acres, is up 1,000 acres from 2018. Area planted, at a record high 175,000 acres, is up 10,000 acres from last year.
