2025 KLA K State Field Day Begins in Wichita County

By Scout Nelson

The first 2025 KLA/Kansas State University Ranch Management Field Day takes place August 21 near Leoti in Wichita County. The event includes expert discussions on modern yield grading systems and cattle health issues, followed by a facility tour and dinner.

One session focuses on improving the accuracy of yield grading systems. The current equation no longer reflects the true red meat yield of today’s cattle. Texas Tech University meat scientist Dale Woerner will share research showing new ways to measure and predict red meat yield per animal. He will also explain how advances in technology and computing could help the beef industry adopt a more accurate grading system in the future.

Another session will explore bovine congestive heart failure, a growing concern in the western Great Plains. This untreatable and often fatal condition is now causing greater losses than respiratory disease on some cattle operations. Experts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the USDA Meat Animal Research Center will present findings on genetic markers linked to disease risk. Their presentation will show how these markers could shape future breeding and herd management practices.

After the educational sessions, attendees will take a virtual tour of the host ranch’s facilities. This includes a look at the bull development pens, calving barn, cattle handling areas, and more. Following the virtual overview, participants can explore the facilities in person and ask questions.

The field day begins with registration at 3:30 p.m. Central Time and ends with a complimentary beef dinner. All livestock producers and agriculture professionals are invited to attend. Directional signs will guide attendees to the location.

This field day combines education, innovation, and practical insights for those involved in the livestock industry.
