Kansas Sees Successful Canola Harvest 2025

Kansas Sees Successful Canola Harvest 2025

By Scout Nelson

Kansas experienced a strong canola harvest this year, with yields ranging from 35 to 45 bushels per acre, and some fields exceeding 50 bushels. According to Kansas State University canola breeder Mike Stamm, the harvest’s success is largely attributed to an ideal spring weather pattern, which featured dry conditions early on, followed by consistent rainfall through late spring and early summer.

"Canola thrives in cool damp conditions," Stamm explained. "The weather this year was ideal for the crop, and we saw that reflected in the yields."

Despite challenges such as reports of powdery mildew, the crop remained resilient, with many fields showing impressive yields. Kansas State University’s variety trials demonstrated the crop's potential, with certain locations averaging yields in the low 60s and top-end yields reaching 80 bushels per acre.

"We had some promising material in our breeding program," Stamm said. "We’re seeing yield levels that are comparable to hybrid yields, which is really exciting."

The harvest not only provided a snapshot of how ideal weather can impact crop production but also allowed Kansas State researchers to collect crucial data from the variety trials. This data will help improve planting strategies and potentially increase future yields.

Stamm recommends that producers incorporate a mix of hybrid and open-pollinated varieties to diversify risk and improve yield potential. Hybrids are particularly beneficial due to their improved pod shatter tolerance and higher yield capabilities.

Overall, the 2025 canola harvest serves as a valuable learning opportunity for growers and researchers alike, showcasing the importance of weather patterns, careful management, and the potential of hybrid varieties.
