Kansas and Missouri Researchers Tackle Drought Challenges in Farming

In the face of a persistent multi-year drought in both Kansas and Missouri, researchers from the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri are working together to assist farmers in preparing for an uncertain future.

At the University of Kansas, scientists from the Kansas Geological Survey are conducting research funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, focusing on the Kansas River Watershed and its vulnerability to drier conditions.

The project aims to understand how agricultural water requirements may change under anticipated future climates, particularly in the context of the ongoing drought. Researchers are concerned that prolonged dry conditions could lead to decreased water levels in the Kansas River, impacting irrigation for farmers. In response, farmers may need to modify their water usage and adopt new techniques for crop cultivation.

The University of Missouri is collaborating with farmers, utilizing a $25 million grant from the USDA, to develop innovative strategies for adapting to a drier future. The project involves working closely with farmers to explore new techniques, such as cover cropping and agroforestry, designed to enhance soil health and conserve water in arid conditions.

Cover cropping involves growing crops in a manner that covers the soil between planted rows, helping to retain soil moisture, even with reduced rainfall. Agroforestry integrates trees and shrubs with pasture and crops, offering protection from extreme weather and fostering biodiversity.

These projects aim to support the agriculture industry's sustained productivity while promoting sustainability. State officials hope that these initiatives will enable farmers to implement resilient practices that ensure a stable food and fuel supply while considering the long-term health of the environment.
