New KU Online Sustainability Certificate Helps Professionals Improve
Kansas Ag Connection - 08/02/2021

University of Kansas Lifelong & Professional Education just launched an online, self-paced Certificate in Sustainability Management. Participants who complete the four-course program are better positioned to contribute to their organization's financial well-being while alleviating the negative environmental impact of their operation.

Amin Sabzevari teaches the certificate courses and is a professional engineer, trainer and certified carbon reduction manager with more than 20 years of engineering and training experience. His experience spans engineering, procurement and construction management in power generation, oil and gas, petrochemical processes, offshore platforms, mining projects, water treatment projects, waste management, reclamation, green-field and brown-field facilities projects across three continents.

"My way of describing sustainability is to do our due diligence and to know the impact of our action on our environment and make sure next generations will have the same resources we have currently," Sabzevari said.

Sabzevari's courses are for anyone who wants to make sustainability an important part of their organization's operations. No prior background or experience in sustainability is needed, and federal employees are eligible for a discount. The course sequence focuses on how to improve the long-term sustainability of a company through manufacturing processes, commercial products and corporate practices. Courses include:

- Principles of Sustainability Management covers the challenges that necessitate the move toward sustainability and the role it can play in development.

- Sustainability Management Measurement and Assessment covers the metrics and tools used to assess sustainability and environmental impact.

- Sustainability Management Solutions introduces sustainable practices in energy generation, waste management, buildings and civil infrastructure.

- Sustainability Management at the Project Level focuses on how sustainable engineering practices can be applied to specific engineering projects: environmental, chemical, civil, materials sustainability and infrastructure sustainability.

Those who complete all four courses will receive a certificate stating they have earned 9.6 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) or 96 Professional Development Hours (PDHs).

"We are excited to add this valuable certificate to our portfolio of professional programs," said Sharon Graham, KU Lifelong & Professional Education vice provost. "This offering not only fulfills our responsibility to provide timely and high-quality professional education but also our responsibility as global citizens supporting more sustainable practices."
