Kansas Ranchers Invited to Grazing Science Events

Kansas Ranchers Invited to Grazing Science Events

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition (KGLC) is organizing two Adult Range Management Academies in August 2025, offering ranchers, landowners, and grazing professionals a chance to improve their grazing systems. These academies are practical, hands-on learning events designed to make grazing operations more efficient, resilient, and sustainable.

Participants can choose between two location-based academies:

  • Tallgrass Academy: August 12–14 at Camp Wood in Elmdale, located in the Flint Hills region.
  • Shortgrass Academy: August 26–28 at Camp Christy in Scott City, in western Kansas.

Each session spans 2½ days and combines expert knowledge from ranchers with up-to-date range of science. Whether attendees are new to grazing or looking to improve their operations, the academies provide valuable insights and practical tools.

What You’ll Learn:

Academy topics include identifying key rangeland plants and understanding their ecological roles, calculating stocking rates, estimating forage allocation, monitoring vegetation response, and building adaptive long-term grazing plans.

Attendees will also explore ecological site descriptions and how to track land health for long-term success. Expert panels and experienced professionals will share strategies they use to maintain resilient operations and protect native grasslands.

Registration Details:

  • The cost is $350 per person, which includes lodging, meals, and tuition.
  • Scholarships worth $175 are available to landowners, ranch employees, and operators.

These events are ideal for those looking to improve their grazing knowledge and strengthen their ranch or land management skills. Academies are also great opportunities to network with peers and industry experts.

Spots are limited, and early registration is recommended. To secure your place, complete the registration form at www.kglc.org.
