Apply now for USDA’s 2024 ELAP deadline

Apply now for USDA’s 2024 ELAP deadline

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) reminds agricultural producers that the application deadline for the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-raised Fish Program (ELAP) is fast approaching on January 30, 2025.

This program is designed to help producers recover financially from loss conditions experienced in 2024, including the notable impacts of the H5N1 virus.

ELAP serves as a financial safety net for losses due to conditions like adverse weather, disease, and other challenges not typically covered by other FSA disaster assistance programs.

With over $80 million provided in ELAP assistance to dairy producers alone, the USDA continues to support the sector’s recovery, especially those affected by reduced milk production due to H5N1.

Zach Ducheneaux, FSA Administrator, asserts, “These events threaten producers’ economic viability, and so it’s important USDA provide support.” This statement underscores the program’s role in stabilizing the agricultural economy during times of unexpected disruptions.

Affected producers, especially those with dairy cattle removed from production due to H5N1, need to act swiftly to meet the application deadline to ensure they receive their due assistance. Those with ongoing impacts that span into 2025 will be required to apply separately for continued support.

For assistance and more information on how to apply, producers are encouraged to visit their nearest USDA Service Center or go online to farmers.gov/service-locator.

This resource offers access to all necessary forms and additional guidance on meeting the program’s criteria, helping producers navigate through the application process efficiently.
