Kansas Farms Tackle Climate with Crop Diversification

Kansas Farms Tackle Climate with Crop Diversification

By Scout Nelson

Kansas farms face challenges due to extreme heat and droughts, resulting in declining wheat, soybean, and corn yields. If this trend persists, farmers will face increased water scarcity and higher temperatures.

Recent studies by the Environmental Defense Fund highlight the efforts Kansas farmers are already making and what extra measures could ensure they prosper despite the climatic challenges.

Wheat, corn, and soybeans dominate Kansas’ fields, but these crops might not be sustainable in the face of rising temperatures. Over-reliance on them has accelerated groundwater depletion. By incorporating crops like sorghum, rye, oats, and millet, not only can water demand decrease by 12%, but farmers can also enhance nutritional output.

JohnElla Holmes of the Kansas Black Farmers Association states that climate-smart agriculture has been on their agenda for years. Farmers in Northwest Kansas credit sorghum in their crop rotations for boosting soil health, proving vital during dry periods.

A wider adaptation is feasible only with support from both public and private sectors. The upcoming 2023 farm bill should emphasize adaptation, offering financial and technical help for alternative crops. Enhancing food supply chain resilience requires companies to foster new markets for diverse crops and financially back their suppliers.

Agricultural lenders too play an important role by aiding farmers in managing the initial costs of transitioning crops, ensuring long-term operational resilience.
