A regional partnership across Nebraska and Iowa has secured significant federal funding to support agricultural innovation, workforce development, and economic growth.
The project, called RuralSTAMINA, brings together about 70 organizations from the public and private sectors. The initiative is designed to build a stronger bioeconomy by encouraging the development and commercialization of new biomanufacturing technologies.
Supported by funding through the National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engines program, the partnership aims to create an innovation ecosystem that benefits rural communities. The program could receive long-term support as it achieves key milestones.
The initiative focuses on converting agricultural materials into higher-value products while expanding advanced manufacturing opportunities. Leaders say the effort will help create new markets and additional economic opportunities for farmers and rural businesses.
Workforce development is another major objective. Schools, colleges, universities, and industry partners will work together to provide education, training, and career opportunities for students interested in agriculture, biotechnology, and manufacturing.
Officials believe the program will help prepare a future workforce capable of supporting a rapidly growing global bioeconomy. Students will gain access to new learning pathways and industry connections that can lead to long-term careers.
The partnership also aims to attract businesses and investment to the region. Supporters say a skilled workforce, strong agricultural resources, and collaboration between organizations will make Nebraska and Iowa attractive locations for future bioeconomy companies.
State and university leaders have welcomed funding, highlighting its potential to strengthen agriculture, increase commodity value, create jobs, and support rural prosperity.
