Cattle Industry Innovation Summit Kansas

By Scout Nelson

A statewide summit in Kansas is set to bring together experts to discuss the future of livestock health and innovation. The Animal Health Intelligence Summit takes place on April 29 in Council Grove and focuses on improving animal health through data, research, and collaboration.

The event is organized by Kansas State University’s Institute for Digital Agriculture and Advanced Analytics and the National Agricultural Biosecurity Center. It is open to cattle producers, veterinarians, researchers, and industry professionals who want to learn about new developments in livestock health.

The summit runs from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at a modern education facility in Council Grove. A dinner follows at 5:00 p.m. The event is free to attend, but participants must register in advance before the deadline of April 22.

Experts from different organizations share important updates on animal health. Topics include emerging disease threats, data-based tools, and strategies to improve decision-making in the cattle industry. Specialists also present research on how diseases affect livestock and how data can help reduce risks.

“The cattle industry is the largest economic sector in Kansas agriculture, so the health of Kansas cattle is of the utmost importance to the Kansas Division of Animal Health,” said Justin Smith, animal health commissioner and state veterinarian. “We appreciate the insight that we gain from research into animal disease; for example, we monitor the data showing the impact of cattle diseases in other parts of the world and use that in our response planning here in the U.S.”

One of the main concerns discussed at the summit is the risk of foreign animal diseases. These diseases can spread quickly and cause serious damage to cattle production and the economy. To better understand these risks, experts will present a simulation showing how a disease outbreak could impact the cattle supply chain.

Overall, the summit provides a valuable platform for sharing knowledge, improving preparedness, and supporting innovation. It helps strengthen the livestock industry and ensures better protection for animals and food systems.
