Harvest progress and crop conditions in Kansas

Kansas experienced favorable fieldwork conditions during the week ending September 22, 2024, with 5.7 days suitable for agricultural activities.

Topsoil and subsoil moisture levels remained relatively adequate, with 43% and 38% rated adequate, respectively.

Field Crops:

  • Winter Wheat: Planting was at 16%, slightly behind last year's 15% but close to the 5-year average of 17%. Emergence was at 2%, aligning with both last year and the average.
  • Corn: Condition was rated 12% very poor, 18% poor, 32% fair, 30% good, and 8% excellent. Maturity and harvest progress were ahead of last year and the average.
  • Soybeans: Condition was rated 5% very poor, 12% poor, 32% fair, 44% good, and 7% excellent. Leaf dropping and harvest were behind last year but ahead of the average.
  • Sorghum: Condition was rated 9% very poor, 14% poor, 39% fair, 33% good, and 5% excellent. Coloring, maturity, and harvest were close to or ahead of last year and the average.
  • Cotton: Condition was rated 3% very poor, 20% poor, 37% fair, 35% good, and 5% excellent. Bolls opening was significantly behind last year but ahead of the average. Harvest was at 1%.
  • Sunflowers: Harvest was 2%, behind last year but equal to the average.
  • Pasture and Range: Conditions were rated 10% very poor, 18% poor, 39% fair, 29% good, and 4% excellent.
