Hay Prices Remain Stable in Kansas

Kansas hay prices remained mostly steady this past week, despite light demand and moderate trade activity. According to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service report from June 17, 2025, most areas of the state have experienced a slow pace in hay sales.

In the southwest, the demand for hay was light. Trade activity remained steady, with dairy alfalfa prices steady and grinding alfalfa increasing by $5. Dairy alfalfa ranged from $1-$1.10 per point RFV, with fair to good quality grinding alfalfa priced at $120-$125 for large rounds and squares.

Ground and delivered hay to feedlots and dairies was priced between $145-$155. The report also indicated that 9,522 tons of grinding alfalfa were bought or sold, with no dairy alfalfa transactions recorded.

The central region of Kansas saw light to moderate demand and trade activity. Dairy alfalfa and alfalfa pellets prices remained steady, while grinding alfalfa prices dropped $5. Small squares for small squares were priced at $10 per bale, and grinding alfalfa ranged from $105–$115 per large round, with prices for 3×4 and 4×4 squares at $110-$120. The region reported 9,987.5 tons of grinding alfalfa and 525 tons of dairy alfalfa bought or sold.

In the southeast, the demand was light, with slow trade activity. Dairy alfalfa prices remained steady, and prices for Bluestem grass hay and Brome hay remained unchanged. Small square alfalfa was priced at $8 per bale, and Bluestem grass hay ranged from $70-$120 per large round. A total of 614 tons of grass hay were reported bought or sold.

The northwest and north central/northeast regions saw little to no demand and very slow trade activity. Prices for fair to good quality grinding alfalfa ranged from $70-$100 in these areas.
