Kansas Grain Sorghum Seeks New Leadership Direction

Kansas Grain Sorghum Seeks New Leadership Direction

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Department of Agriculture recently announced election outcomes for seats on the Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission, covering Districts VII and VIII in the eastern region.

These commodity commissions are led by growers focused on ensuring the economic stability of their industries through targeted investments in market development, education, research, and promotion. Each commissioner serves a three-year term overseeing checkoff funds that support initiatives.

In District VII, no candidates ran for commissioner, resulting in an unfilled seat. According to commission guidelines, an appointment process may be used to select a representative if a seat remains vacant following an election. Meanwhile, District VIII in the East Central area confirmed a representative from Morris County, who brings prior experience in commission leadership and research-based improvements.

In District IX in the Southeast region, a new representative from Wilson County will fill the seat. This district is recognized for its potential growth in sorghum production, especially within diversified crop rotation systems.

These changes reflect a continued commitment by the state’s grain sorghum producers to achieve advancements in sustainability, market reach, and production efficiency. The Commission’s work fosters a healthy and profitable industry by allocating funds to projects that address current challenges, explore new technologies, and share practical knowledge across the sorghum sector.

By collaborating with research institutions and industry partners, commissioners play a crucial role in shaping the future of sorghum within the state.

Looking ahead, the next Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission election cycle will occur in 2026 for Districts IV, V, and VI. The petition process for these positions begins on September 1, 2025, and concludes on November 30 of that year.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture encourages interested individuals to become involved in the electoral process, helping ensure strong leadership for the state’s grain commodities. Additional details regarding voting guidelines, eligibility, and the candidate petition process are available on the Kansas Department of Agriculture website.

Through consistent, grower-focused efforts, the Kansas Grain Sorghum Commission continues to promote a thriving sorghum sector. By leveraging the expertise and dedication of elected commissioners, the state remains poised for ongoing progress in this essential agricultural industry.
