The Kansas Department of Agriculture has announced the opening of grant applications for the Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure (RFSI) program. This initiative, bolstered by a $6.46 million agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Marketing Service, is designed to fortify the middle segments of the food supply chain.
The RFSI program's goal is to award competitive grants to projects that expand the capacity and infrastructure for handling, processing, storing, and distributing local and regional agricultural products, excluding meat and poultry. This initiative targets Kansas-based food and farm businesses, nonprofits, local and Tribal governments, and institutions like schools and hospitals.
Two types of grants are available through the RFSI program: Infrastructure Grants, ranging from $100,000 to $3,000,000, and Simplified Equipment-Only Grants, ranging from $10,000 to $100,000. Infrastructure Grant applicants must match 50% of the project cost, with exceptions for reduced matching requirements. Equipment-Only Grants do not require cost matching.
Applications will undergo a competitive review, with assessment criteria including project need, outcomes, feasibility, and community impact. The program particularly encourages projects that support underserved and socially disadvantaged agricultural communities.
The application deadline is set for 5:00 p.m. CT on January 31, 2024.
The Kansas Department of Agriculture aims to create an environment conducive to sustainable agricultural growth and statewide economic development. This vision is pursued through advocacy and outreach efforts across all agricultural sectors.
