The Kansas City area welcomed the 2025 Kansas Livestock Association (KLA) Young Stockmen’s Academy (YSA) for their second seminar from May 5 to 7. Over the three-day event, class members explored the beef and dairy industries and gained valuable insights into consumer engagement.
Merck Animal Health, the seminar’s exclusive sponsor, hosted the group at its Lawrence and Lenexa locations. Staff offered an overview of the animal health sector, discussed new research, and guided participants through a laboratory tour. A visit to a local ranch also allowed the group to witness Merck’s virtual fencing and livestock monitoring technologies in action.
The students toured Bichelmeyer Meats, Dairy Farmers of America, Golden Belt Beef, and National Beef Leathers. These visits provided firsthand knowledge of how each company operates and serves customers and members.
In addition to tours, the class participated in outreach by preparing and offering Kansas City strip steak samples at two Hy-Vee grocery stores. This activity helped them connect with shoppers and share information about beef. Prior to the event, Kansas Beef Council’s Director of Nutrition, Abby Heidari, spoke to the group about consumer communication strategies.
The group also stopped at Whole Foods Market, where they learned about marketing protein products to niche audiences. These sessions helped participants better understand the business side of livestock production and consumer preferences.
“This hands-on experience provided a clear connection between livestock producers and end consumers,” reflecting the Academy’s goal of building leadership in agriculture.
The YSA will next meet in mid-September for their third seminar, focusing on central and western Kansas beef and dairy operations. Through these events, the KLA supports young leaders with education, outreach, and advocacy skills in the livestock industry.
