The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) is conducting the 2025 Bluestem Pasture Survey, inviting input from Kansas residents to collect data on native tallgrass pasture use and leasing practices. The survey, administered through the K-State Land Use Survey Center, is open until April 30, 2025.
This biennial survey provides valuable insights into pasture availability, leasing rates, and fencing costs, helping ranchers and landowners make informed decisions. The anonymous and voluntary survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and serves as an important tool for the agricultural community.
“The native tallgrass region of Kansas provides rich grazing opportunities for cattle producers, and this biennial survey collects valuable data that can aid landowners and renters when entering into lease agreements,” said Secretary of Agriculture Mike Beam. “Underwriting this important survey tool is one way our agency works to provide useful data that supports the state’s agriculture industry.”
The survey results help in establishing fair leasing agreements, ensuring accurate pasture valuation, and assisting landowners in understanding regional trends. The data contributes to economic stability in the grazing industry and supports decision-making for future land use planning.

This survey is a joint initiative between the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Division of Agriculture Marketing and the K-State Land Use Survey Center. The results will provide essential data to support Kansas agriculture and livestock operations.
