Milk production in April 2025 continued to rise across the United States. According to new data, the 24 major dairy-producing states reported a combined total of 18.6 billion pounds of milk. This marks a 1.6 percent increase compared to April 2024.
Revised figures for March 2025 show production reached 19.1 billion pounds, which was up 1.1 percent from the previous year. The March revision added an extra 26 million pounds or 0.1 percent over last month's preliminary estimate.
Production per cow in the 24 major states averaged 2,071 pounds for April. This was 12 pounds more than the same month last year, showing a modest but meaningful gain in productivity.
The number of milk cows also increased. In these 24 states, the total number reached 8.98 million head—up 93,000 from April 2024 and 7,000 more than the March 2025 count.
On a national level, milk production reached 19.4 billion pounds in April 2025, representing a 1.5 percent increase compared to April 2024. The average production per cow across the United States was 2,055 pounds—11 pounds more than one year earlier.
There were 9.43 million milk cows across the country during April 2025, 89,000 more than April last year and 5,000 more than in March.
These increases in both per-cow production and total cow numbers indicate strong overall growth in the dairy sector. The continued upward trend highlights advances in dairy management and genetics, as well as consistent demand.
This data shows how dairy farms across the country are working efficiently to meet growing needs while also adapting to market and environmental changes.
