Nearly 90 Percent of Kansas Soil Moisture Very Short to Short



For the week ending Sunday, there were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 58% very short, 30% short, 12% adequate, and 0% surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 59% very short, 30% short, 11% adequate, and 0% surplus.

Winter wheat planted was 64%, behind 73% last year, and near 66% for the five-year average. Emerged was 33%, behind 45% last year and 44% average.

Corn harvested was 73%, near 74% last year, but ahead of 64% average.

Soybean condition rated 25% very poor, 26% poor, 28% fair, 19% good, and 2% excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 90%, near 89% last year, and equal to average. Harvested was 45%, ahead of 39% last year and 34% average.

Sorghum condition rated 20% very poor, 33% poor, 30% fair, 16% good, and 1% excellent. Sorghum mature was 83%, near 87% last year and 84% average. Harvested was 39%, near 42% last year, but ahead of 28% average.

Cotton condition rated 11% very poor, 41% poor, 31% fair, 16% good, and 1% excellent. Cotton bolls opening was 88%, near 89% last year, but ahead of 83% average. Harvested was 26%, well ahead of 3% last year and 4% average.

Sunflowers harvested was 32%, behind 38% last year, but ahead of 24% average.

Pasture and range conditions rated 47% very poor, 29% poor, 18% fair, 6% good, and 0% excellent.
