The Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS) is set to begin tomorrow at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, marking its 93rd year as one of the state’s premier youth livestock events. A total of 2,104 animals has been entered by 845 exhibitors, reflecting the continued enthusiasm and dedication of young agricultural leaders.
This year’s entries include 183 market steers, 359 breeding heifers, 257 market hogs, 343 breeding gilts, 258 market lambs, 290 breeding ewes, 211 market goats, and 203 commercials does. These numbers highlight both the diversity and quality of livestock that will be showcased over the weekend.
Beyond competition, KJLS continues its strong tradition of supporting youth education. Scholarships are awarded to exhibitors who demonstrate excellence in academics, community service, and involvement in 4-H or FFA. Since the program’s establishment in 1993, a total of $577,550 has been awarded to 398 participants. In 2024 alone, $23,000 was distributed among 13 deserving youth, reinforcing the event’s role in investing in the next generation of agricultural leaders.
In addition to the show, the Kansas Livestock Foundation (KLF) Club Calf Sale will take place on October 4. Both steer and heifer prospects will be available, with commission proceeds dedicated to KLF Youth in Agriculture scholarships, further extending the program’s commitment to educational opportunities.
For those unable to attend in person, results and updates will be shared on the Kansas Junior Livestock Show website and Facebook page throughout the weekend. The event will also be broadcast live on Ringside Live, allowing broader audiences to follow the competitions.
As the 93rd KJLS unfolds, the combination of livestock exhibitions, scholarships, and community support underscores the importance of youth involvement in agriculture and the long-standing legacy of this celebrated Kansas tradition.
