Soybean Growers Encouraged to Join National Board

By Scout Nelson

The United Soybean Board (USB) is inviting soybean producers to apply for open positions on the national checkoff board. This opportunity allows farmers to step into leadership roles and help guide investments in research, education, and promotion of U.S. soybeans.

The checkoff program focuses on increasing profitability and demand for U.S.-grown soybeans. Farmers on the board help make decisions that lead to real benefits, such as developing soy-based products and expanding trade relationships. The board has shown a strong return, providing $12.30 for every dollar invested by growers.

One former board member shared his experience of working with key partners such as the Clean Fuels Alliance America and the U.S. Soybean Export Council. He highlighted international outreach efforts that helped promote high oleic soybeans and build global connections.

Though the position is voluntary, travel and related expenses are reimbursed. Board members must commit to attending three meetings each year—in February, July, and December—as well as conference calls and events supporting the mission of USB.

According to the USDA, applicants must be active soybean producers who own or share the risk in soybean production. All eligible growers from diverse backgrounds and production methods are encouraged to apply.

The selection process aims to reflect the diversity of U.S. soybean farmers, including variations in farm size, location, experience, and marketing strategies.

Two positions are currently available due to upcoming term completions. The Kansas Soybean Commission is working to ensure its nominees represent a broad spectrum of the state’s soybean industry.

Serving on the national board is a unique chance for growers to represent their peers and influence the future of the soybean sector through collaborative leadership and innovation.
