US Crop Progress Shows Steady Planting Pace

By Scout Nelson

For the week ending April 27, 2025, U.S. farmers reported steady progress in planting and crop development. According to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, growers had 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork during the week. This allowed significant planting progress across many states.

Soil moisture remained mostly favorable. Topsoil moisture was rated 8% very short, 22% short, 59% adequate, and 11% surplus. Subsoil moisture followed similar trends, with 12% very short, 28% short, 54% adequate, and 6% surplus.

Winter wheat crops showed stable condition ratings. The condition was rated 4% very poor, 13% poor, 36% fair, 40% good, and 7% excellent. Winter wheat jointing reached 78%, slightly behind last year’s 82% but ahead of the five-year average of 66%. Headed wheat stood at 19%, trailing last year’s 29%, but better than the 10% five-year average.

Corn planting reached 39%, slightly ahead of both last year’s 37% and the five-year average of 29%. Corn emergence was at 11%, slightly behind 15% last year but above the 8% average.

Soybean planting also advanced well, with 13% planted compared to 11% last year and 7% for the average. Sorghum planting reached 3%, ahead of the 1% five-year average.

This data was gathered from USDA Farm Service Agency reports, Kansas State University Extension Service, and local reporters.
