Experts Gather to Share Forage Solutions for Dry Conditions

By Scout Nelson

Kansas State University will host the Kansas Forage Conference on November 5, 2025, at the K-State Southwest Research-Extension Center in Garden City. This one-day free event will bring together farmers, researchers, and industry experts to share the latest advancements in forage management under limited-water conditions.

Running from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the conference will feature practical, fast-paced sessions covering topics such as forage economics, soil health, fertility, and crop insurance. Attendees will also gain insights into risk management, marketing, and new research on sustainable forage production. Lunch will be provided, courtesy of sponsors including High Plains Farm Credit, American AgCredit, and the Kansas Forage and Grassland Council.

Forage plays an essential role in Kansas agriculture. In 2022, the state produced over five million tons of hay, ranking third nationally, and contributing more than $536 million to the economy. According to the Kansas Department of Agriculture, forage supports nearly 6,700 jobs and generates over $546 million in statewide economic output.

Experts will discuss topics such as annual forage economics with John Holman, soil impacts of grazing and cover crops with Augustine Obour, managing prussic acid with Scott Staggenborg, alfalfa profitability with Romulo Lollato, and forage fertility management with Logan Simon. Other sessions include insurance tools, invasive grass control, and updates from the Kansas Livestock Association.

Participants can register online at the K-State event website, though registration is not required. The event provides an opportunity for farmers to gain practical insights and connect with peers across the region for stronger forage management and farm resilience.
