High Plains cattle market update

The High Plains area witnessed a decrease in weekly weighted average direct cattle sales for the week ending July 21. The USDA Livestock Poultry and Grain Market News Division in St. Joseph, Missouri, reported receipts of 57,809 head, down from 67,493 head a week ago and 74,776 head a year ago. This report covers sales from feedlots in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Iowa, and Minnesota.

For steers, 15,643 head weighing between 1,300 and 1,650 lbs. sold for prices ranging from $187.00 to $198.00, averaging $195.58. For steers with 65 to 80% Choice, 6,092 head weighing between 1,150 and 1,575 lbs. sold for $186.00 to $196.00, averaging $190.52. Steers with 35 to 65% Choice, 1,971 head weighing 1,150 to 1,450 lbs., were priced between $188.00 and $188.50, averaging $188.27.

Live delivered steers over 80% Choice, 898 head weighing 1,400 to 1,540 lbs., were sold for $195.00 to $199.00, averaging $197.51. Steers with 65 to 80% Choice, 509 head weighing 1,350 to 1,380 lbs., fetched $192.00 to $194.00, averaging $193.49.

Dressed delivered steers over 80% Choice, 8,983 head weighing 822 to 1,015 lbs., sold for $308.00 to $318.00, averaging $310.09. For 65 to 80% Choice, 2,312 head weighing 851 to 986 lbs. were sold at $307.00 to $310.00, averaging $309.84. Dressed FOB steers, 180 head weighing 898 lbs., were sold at $314.00.

For heifers, 5,567 head weighing between 1,125 and 1,400 lbs. were sold on a Live FOB basis for $185.00 to $197.00, averaging $194.56. Heifers with 65 to 80% Choice, 2,918 head weighing 1,100 to 1,360 lbs., were priced between $187.00 and $196.00, averaging $189.12. Heifers with 35 to 65% Choice, 557 head weighing 1,150 to 1,250 lbs., sold for $188.00.

Live delivered heifers over 80% Choice, 451 head weighing 1,250 to 1,350 lbs., were priced at $196.00 to $198.00, averaging $197.66. Heifers with 65 to 80% Choice, 317 head weighing 1,275 to 1,300 lbs., fetched $194.00. Heifers with 35 to 65% Choice, 287 head weighing 1,180 lbs., were priced at $193.00.

Dressed delivered heifers, 1,027 head weighing 805 to 916 lbs., sold at $310.00. Heifers with 65 to 80% Choice, 88 head weighing 962 lbs., were also sold at $310.00. There were no reported sales for dressed FOB heifers.
