Impact of Drone Limits on Wisconsin Soybean Farmers

Impact of Drone Limits on Wisconsin Soybean Farmers

By Jamie Martin

The Wisconsin Soybean Association (WSA) is closely following recent federal developments concerning potential restrictions on certain foreign-made drones used in U.S. agriculture and their potential impact on soybean farmers.

Precision agriculture technologies, including drones, are critical tools that help farmers monitor crop health, manage input costs, and operate more efficiently. Because foreign-manufactured drones account for a large portion of the agricultural drone market, sudden restrictions without practical domestic alternatives could impose financial and operational challenges on farmers already facing tight margins and market uncertainties.

WSA acknowledges the importance of national security but stresses that farmers must continue to have access to reliable tools for modern agriculture.

“Wisconsin soybean farmers rely on precision technology to make informed decisions in the field and remain competitive in a challenging farm economy,” said Doug Rebout, president of WSA and a Janesville soybean farmer.

“National security matters, but it’s just as important for policymakers to weigh how these decisions play out on the farm. Removing reliable technology without practical alternatives creates new costs and uncertainty for farmers who are already operating on thin margins.”

WSA advocates for policies that protect farmers’ access to essential precision agriculture tools, including drones, GPS systems, spectrum resources, and broadband connectivity.

The organization encourages federal agencies and policymakers to collaborate with the agricultural community to address security concerns while ensuring farmers can continue to operate efficiently with effective and affordable technology.
