The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) has opened a public comment period to gather feedback on a potential restriction regarding the introduction and spread of Callery pear trees (Pyrus calleryana) within the state. The proposal aims to address the invasive nature of these trees, encompassing popular varieties such as Bradford, Cleveland Select, Chanticleer, and others.
Recognizing the Callery pear's propensity to proliferate beyond intended landscapes and its invasive characteristics, the KDA seeks suggestions on how to effectively control the planting and movement of these trees within Kansas. One potential measure under consideration is the implementation of a quarantine that would restrict the introduction and internal transfer of Callery pear trees across the state.
It is important to note that while the KDA recommends the removal of all invasive species from public and private lands, the current proposal does not mandate the removal of previously planted Callery pear trees. Consequently, designating the species as a noxious weed would not be applicable in this particular case.
The KDA's plant protection and weed control program prioritizes safeguarding Kansas' native and cultivated plants from the risks associated with harmful plant pests, including insects, plant diseases, weeds, and other organisms.
