Kansas Hosts Delegation from Wheat Markets

By Scout Nelson

A delegation of six milling industry professionals from Mexico, Central America, and Venezuela recently toured Kansas wheat fields to evaluate this year’s Hard Red Winter wheat crop. Their visit was part of the Wheat Quality Council’s annual wheat tour and was supported by U.S.

Wheat Associates (USW) through USDA’s Regional Agricultural Promotion Program and Market Access Program.

The tour began in Manhattan, Kansas, with a session on the state’s diverse growing conditions and challenges faced by local producers. Delegates visited farms to observe operations, perform crop yield calculations, and interact directly with wheat growers. These hands-on experiences help international buyers understand wheat quality and build trust with U.S. producers.

“This tour is an excellent opportunity for U.S. customers from Mexico, Central America and Venezuela to get out into the fields and see Kansas wheat production firsthand,” said Stephanie Bryant-Erdmann, USW Assistant Regional Director.

The delegation included participants from Honduras and Costa Rica. USW staff accompanied them throughout the trip. The experience included equipment demonstrations, crop evaluations, and one-on-one conversations, helping to build personal and professional relationships.

“Mexico is the largest buyer of U.S. wheat in the world,” said Mitch Skalicky of USW. In marketing year 2024/25, Mexico has purchased 1.57 million metric tons of Hard Red Winter wheat.

U.S. wheat exports to Central America are also up 42% year over year. Honduras maintains a 100% market share for U.S. wheat. Venezuela, a top 20 export market, remains an important buyer of U.S. HRW wheat.

USW’s efforts to build strong ties with international customers help promote U.S. wheat globally and increase its value and reach.
