According to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service, Kansas's milk production faced a minor setback in October 2023. The state produced a total of 348 million pounds of milk, showing a 1% decline when compared to the same period in the previous year.
This slight drop in production can be attributed to a reduction in the dairy cow population. The average number of milk cows in October 2023 was 173,000, which was 2,000 heads fewer than in October 2022. Despite this decrease in dairy cow numbers, the milk production per cow remained impressive, averaging 2,010 pounds.
This data highlights the dynamic nature of the dairy industry in Kansas, reflecting changes in livestock numbers and their impact on overall production. It provides a critical insight into the state's agricultural landscape, particularly in the dairy sector.
