Rollins Shuts Border After R CALF Warning

Rollins Shuts Border After R CALF Warning

By Jamie Martin

In response to the continued spread of New World Screwworm (NWS), Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins has announced the closure of all U.S. southern border ports to livestock trade. The closure comes after strong advocacy from R-CALF USA and 19 affiliate groups urging immediate action to protect U.S. livestock.

The pest, which damages warm-blooded animals by feeding on living tissue, has moved north in Mexico, nearing the U.S. border. R-CALF USA warned of the growing threat and demanded a halt to livestock imports from affected areas until Mexico fully eradicates the pest.

Secretary Rollins acted quickly to block the movement of cattle, bison, and horses across the border. This action is a part of USDA’s comprehensive strategy to maintain animal health and national biosecurity.

R-CALF USA issued a public statement supporting the decision, calling it a critical step to shield U.S. producers from a dangerous pest that could cause major harm if it enters the country.

The USDA has also committed to ongoing surveillance and control programs in partnership with Mexican officials. These include sterile fly releases and field inspections to stop the screwworm before it crosses the border.

R-CALF USA emphasized the importance of strict controls and praised the USDA for responding swiftly to their concerns. The livestock trade shutdown marks a strong stand for protecting U.S. animal agriculture.
