US wheat farmers visit Africa to build trade relationships

By Scout Nelson

A recent trade mission to Sub-Saharan Africa by US Wheat Associates (USW) offered valuable insights for Kansas wheat farmer Gary Millershaski. The trip aimed to build relationships with millers and explore the potential for increased US wheat exports.

Like planting wheat, developing new markets requires upfront investment and time to see results. Millershaski emphasized the importance of knowledge sharing and collaboration between farmers and end-users to navigate market challenges.

The 10-day mission focused on Nigeria and South Africa, with a growing and youthful population of over 1 billion people. While Sub-Saharan Africa has seen steady growth in wheat imports, the competition is fierce, with the European Union dominating the market.

Despite past success in Nigeria, recent economic difficulties have impacted wheat imports. Inflation and a devalued currency have led millers to prioritize lower-cost options. Consequently, US wheat imports to Nigeria have dropped significantly.

However, the positive relationships built during the trade mission offer hope for the future. Millers expressed their appreciation for US wheat and highlighted ongoing collaborations like technical training programs.

A visit to a South African flour mill revealed another promising aspect of the trip. There, Millershaski encountered a representative from Kansas State University sharing expertise on milling efficiency with local millers. This technical assistance is crucial for supporting new and developing millers in Africa.

Millershaski returned home with a broader perspective on the global wheat industry. While challenges exist, the focus on building relationships and fostering collaboration points towards a promising future for US wheat exports.
