Barb Downey and Joe Carpenter, owners of Downey Ranch Inc. near Wamego, received the 2024 Environmental Stewardship Award from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) in San Antonio, Texas. This national recognition highlights their dedication to sustainable land management and conservation practices in the cattle industry.
The Environmental Stewardship Award Program (ESAP), established in 1991, honors cattle producers who implement innovative environmental practices. Each year, one national winner is chosen from seven regional honorees, each demonstrating unique conservation strategies suited to their landscapes.
Downey and Carpenter prioritize responsible grazing techniques to improve rangeland health and reduce reliance on harvested forage. Their rotational grazing approach ensures better pasture utilization, while bale grazing helps meet winter feeding needs efficiently. They also use prescribed burning to manage grass species diversity and prevent overgrowth of woody plants. Advanced technology supports their efforts to improve cattle welfare, optimize land use and streamline operations.
Beyond their own ranch, they actively share their knowledge with industry groups, students and other stakeholders through educational tours. Their willingness to educate others underscores their commitment to advancing sustainability in cattle farming.
“If our grasslands, our cattle and our ranch are thriving, then our family thrives, and that is the foundation for everything we have built,” said Downey. “The land is sometimes hard for a rancher to talk about because it is part of you, it’s just who you are, your soul. We’ve given our lives to it so our kids can continue on.”
The ESAP program recognizes ranchers like Downey and Carpenter, who are dedicated to preserving natural resources while maintaining productive operations. More information can be found at www.environmentalstewardship.org.
